The Central Music Director ensures musical excellence, system alignment, and consistent worship experiences across all Journey Church campuses. This role exists to develop musicians, support campus worship directors, maintain unity in worship culture, and create distraction-free environments where people encounter Jesus. The Central MD champions our standards of excellence, preparedness, spiritual leadership, and team health—elevating both the musical and spiritual climate of our church.

Role Summary

The Central MD oversees all music direction systems for the church, including track templates, PCO accuracy, campus setlist alignment, auditioning, musician development, and coordination with the Production Team. This person supports campuses by training Music Directors (MDs), helping schedule musicians, managing multitracks, and ensuring that every worship environment reflects Journey’s musical distinctives and ministry values.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Scheduling & Staffing Support

  • Receive band staffing requests from campus worship directors and support them in scheduling qualified musicians.

  • Assist in filling cancellations or call-outs by coordinating across campuses and band member pools.

  • Help vocal leads finalize keys and prepare musically for services.

2. Tracks, Setlists, and Planning Center (PCO) Management

  • Create and maintain the master multitrack playback template for all campuses.

  • Ensure all PCO song sections accurately reflect arrangements, transitions, and campus needs.

  • Import and maintain all needed worship resources (stems, charts, demos, reference files) into PCO.

  • Verify campus setlists weekly to guarantee alignment across all locations.

  • Upload, organize, and manage vocal reference files.

3. Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Work with Production to coordinate lighting, timecode, lyric cues, and any additional programmed elements.

  • Assist with lyric automation or production support as needed.

4. Music Director Development & Leadership

  • Recruit, develop, and sheperd MDs for each campus.

  • Provide 1-on-1 coaching, feedback, and weekly support to strengthen musical culture.

  • Invest in MDs and musicians through Wednesday night development gatherings and prayer services.

5. Auditions & Onboarding

  • Process new worship team applicants and schedule live auditions.

  • Conduct or oversee 1-1 audition evaluations.

  • Ensure musicians meet Journey’s musical, spiritual, and cultural standards before joining teams.

  • Support onboarding for Multitracks and platform systems (seat assignments, access, etc.).

6. Playback & Multitracks Administration

  • Manage all multitracks-related responsibilities, including updating seats, importing stems, assigning roles, and organizing resources.

  • Ensure new members are trained in Multitracks and understand playback expectations.

7. Campus & Team Support

  • Attend weekly worship meetings to contribute to planning and quality improvement.

  • Provide ongoing support to East Campus to ensure synced songs, arrangements, and resources.

  • Assist with worship events and special services as needed.

Availability & Expectations

The Central Music Director role supports a multi-campus ministry and requires a level of presence that ensures musical excellence, culture alignment, and team development. While this position allows for strategic delegation, it also carries key moments where the Central MD’s leadership is essential.

Regular Availability Includes:

  • Sundays:
    Present at broadcast campus unless delegating to a qualified MD who can uphold the same standard of excellence, preparedness, and leadership.

  • Central Experience Department Events:
    Required presence for all major Central gatherings, nights of worship, special services, team nights, and development events.

  • Staff Meetings & Trainings:
    Attendance at designated all-staff meetings, Experience Department meetings, and leadership development sessions as scheduled.

  • Midweek Responsibilities:
    Participation in Wednesday development events and rehearsals as relevant.
